Electrical conduction
Electrical conduction is the movement of electrically charged particles through a transmission medium.
The movement can form an electric current in response to an electric field.
The underlying mechanism for this movement depends on the material. Conduction in metals and resistors is well described by Ohm's Law, which states that the current is proportional to the applied electric field.
Metals are good conductors because they have unfilled space in the valence energy band.
Another medium, a "perfect vacuum," contains no charged particles; vacuums normally behave as very good insulators.
However, metal electrode surfaces can cause a region of the vacuum to become conductive by injecting free electrons or ions through either field emission or thermionic emission.

Firefighters could be helped by holograph technology
Infra-red holography could be more useful than the camera imagery currently used by firefighters searching for people trapped in burning buildings, researchers in Italy say.
They have built an imaging system that uses an infra-red laser to penetrate areas of thick smoke and flames.
The beam reflects off any objects, including people, within the area.
That data is then decoded by an imager to create a 3D model of everything inside the room.
Infra-red (IR) camera monitors currently used by firefighters require lenses that can be blinded by intense fire, said researcher Pietro Ferraro, of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) Istituto Nazionale di Ottica in Italy.
"IR cameras cannot 'see' objects or humans behind flames because of the need for a zoom lens that concentrates the rays on the sensor to form the image," he said.
"It became clear to us that we had in our hands a technology that could be exploited by emergency responders and firefighters at a fire scene to see through smoke without being blinded by flames, a limitation of existing technology."

Mr Ferraro added that fire victims who were moving could also be picked up by the system.
"Perhaps most importantly, we demonstrated for the first time that a holographic recording of a live person can be achieved even while the body is moving."
Other potential applications include monitoring breathing and cardiac activity, said Mr Ferraro - but the next step for the researchers was to make the technology more portable.

Satellites falling: 'Space dust' responsible?
Satellites are falling and 'space dust' or natural micro-meteoroids may be responsible for damaging and even completely shutting them down, a Stanford scientist has claimed.
New research by Stanford aeronautics and astronautics Assistant Professor Sigrid Close suggests she is on track to solve a mystery that has long bedevilled space exploration: Why do satellites fail?
It is popularly imagined that satellites are imperilled by impacts from "space junk" - particles of man-made debris the size of a pea that litter the Earth's upper atmosphere - or by large meteoroids like the one that recently exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia.
Although such impacts are a serious concern, most satellites that have died in space haven't been knocked out by them. Something else has killed them.
Researchers say the likely culprit, it turns out, is material so tiny its nickname is "space dust."
These natural micro-meteoroids are not directly causing satellites harm. When they hit an object in space, however, they are travelling so fast that they turn into a quasi-neutral gas of ions and electrons known as plasma.
That plasma, Close theorises, has the potential to create a radio signal that can damage, and even completely shut down, the satellites they hit.
The signal is an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP – similar in concept but not in size to what is generated by nuclear detonations.
A massive EMP recently knocked out cell phones when the Chelyabinsk meteoroid hit, the report said.
"Spacecraft transmit a radio signal, so they can receive one that might potentially disable them," Close said.

Ten smartphones with tablet ambitions...
Product Round-up How we all laughed when Samsung launched the Galaxy Note toward the end of 2011. Who could possibly want a phone with a 5.3-inch screen? It turned out rather a lot of people did, and the unqualified success of the 4.8-inch Galaxy S III and 5.6-inch Galaxy Note 2 proved that what many punters want is a phone with a really, really, really big screen. A tablet and phone in one, in other words.
All hail, then, the rise of the ‘phablet’ - a stupid word, of course, but one that now seems firmly lodged in the parlance of our time.
A day spent wandering around the exhibition halls of this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas underlined the fact that the Note is only the tip of the iceberg. According to market watcher IHS iSuppli, 60.4 million phones with screens of five inches or more between the corners will find a home during 2013, a 135 per cent rise over 2012’s total. By 2016 world+dog will supposedly be buying 140 million of these monsters.
And it’s not just the screen sizes that got bigger at CES. Everywhere you looked there were devices with 1080p resolution displays. On a 5-inch screen that equates to a 441 pixels per inch dot density. The reign of the 720p superphone has ended almost as soon as it began.
Sadly for fans of Apple’s mobile operating systems, and of Microsoft’s, the cupboard is bare. It’s hard to imagine that a Windows Phone 8 device with a 5-inch screen won’t arrive before the end of 2013 so, for the time being, the best on offer is the 4.8-inch Samsung Ativ S. As for Apple, there are rumours of a new 5.0-inch iPhone six months or so down the line but who knows how reliable they are.
Time then to poke the Android phablet anthill with a stick and see what comes angrily spilling out. I should say in advance that I’ve only had a brief fiddle with some of these devices so the final products that wash up on Blighty’s shores may not be quite the same. Here is what to expect.
Alcatel One Touch Scribe HD
Alcatel was the surprise of CES 2013, coming from nowhere to display a raft of phones, phablets and tablets that were really rather impressive. Many pundits thought the highlight was the Scribe X with its 5-inch, 1920 x 1080 display, quad-core 1.4GHz processor and 12Mp camera, but it was the lesser 5-inch, 1280 x 720, IPS LCD Scribe HD that caught my eye. The reason: I suspect it will be as cheap as chips when, or indeed if, it goes on sale in the UK while still offering a pretty decent specification.
Running on a 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 chip with 1GB of RAM, the Scribe HD comes with 4GB of storage, a MicroSD card slot and a usefully beefy 2500mAh battery. Apparently it has been designed in such a way that the chip doesn’t suffer from the overheating that Alcatel reckons affects some of its quad-core rivals - Nexus 4, I guess they are looking at you here. The plastic body wasn’t the most impressive thing I’ve ever had in my hand, but I’m guessing it will cost much less than any handset here apart from the super-budget Kogan, assuming Alcatel doesn’t go tits up in the meantime.

Asus PadFone 2
The PadFone 2 grabs the phablet concept by the short and curlies, and drags it off into the woods for a good seeing to. A device of two parts, Harry, it consists of a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 phone that can slot into the back of a 10.1-inch tablet. Unlike the Mk. 1 PadFone that never made it to these shores, there is no inconvenient hatch to open before you dock the phone - you just slide it into the grooved receptacle on the back and - wallop - you have a 10-inch phone with a 1280 x 800 display. And you can still use the phone’s 12Mp camera.
The PadFone 1’s clever but apparently seldom used combo stylus/earpiece hasn’t been carried over, but you can still make calls when docked, either with a Bluetooth headset or through the tablet’s speaker and mic. Or you can answer a call by simply sliding the phone out of the dock. With a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, 2GB of RAM, 2140 and 5000mAh batteries, the PadFone 2 can handle the sprint and the marathon, and is arguably the perfect solution to the one device, one data plan, all uses conundrum. Expect an official announcement about UK availability this week at Mobile World Congress.
Adobe releases Photoshop Touch for iPhone, iPod touch and Android phones
Adobe has finally brought its Photoshop Touch app to iPhone, iPod touch and Android phones. Photoshop Touch has been available for iPad and Android tablets since early last year.
The iPhone and Android apps come with a feature-set that's almost identical to the tablets apps. The UI, of course, is optimised for the smaller screen of mobile phones.
Adobe Photoshop Touch for iPhone and Android phones includes core Photoshop features like layers, advanced selections tools, adjustments and filters. Also included are touch-optimised features like Scribble Selection for high-precision selections using just the finger, and Camera Fill for real-time blending of your camera feed with layers. This app features the same filters as the tablet version, like Colour Drops and Acrylic Paint, and also a new Ripple filter.
Photoshop Touch comes with support for Adobe Creative Cloud, which means you can start a project on the phone, continue it on the tablet or your desktop/ laptop running Adobe CS6. This capability is available to every customer with a free Creative Cloud account.
However, like the tablet the app, it still does not include support for Dropbox or opening files via email, which is sure to disappoint many users.
The app is available for download via App Store or Google Play for Rs. 270.
Adobe Photoshop Touch for iPad (Rs. 550 on the App Store) last received an update in December last year. The update improved the Gallery browsing experience. Adobe Photoshop Touch for Android tablets (Rs. 550 approximately on Google Play) was last updated on 28 November 2012. The update included an interface optimised for 7-inch tablets, improved grid layout, two new effects, smoother brush strokes, quick access to last 5 colours, sharing options and various bug fixes.

Evernote hits 1 million user mark in India
Evernote, the company behind the popular cross platform note-taking app, announced that it has crossed 1 million users in India.
"User adoption for Evernote in India started slowly, but picked up at a rapid pace in the last two years. The global user base of Evernote is more than 50 million today and in India now we've hit a million!" said Linda Kozlowski, Director of Market Development, APAC for Evernote, while commenting on the milestone.
The company also released a few statistics around the usage of the Evernote service. As per the company, Evernote added 92,000 users per month in India, on an average, over the last 3 months. The company added that it has 3 times as many users as 12 months ago and 12 times as many users as 2 years ago.
She added, "Like our CEO, Phil, always says, we built Evernote for ourselves, it was something we wanted to use and now we love and rely on it. We quickly realised that there were many more like us who really appreciate the product. Having a million users in India is evidence of Evernote's value across regions and cultures."
In terms of platforms, Evernote has the most users on Android, followed by Evernote Web and Evernote Windows, respectively. Interestingly, most notes in India have been created on Windows, closely followed by Android.
Launched in 2008, the service allows users to capture, organise, and find information across multiple platforms. Users can take notes, clip webpages, snap photos using their mobile phones, create to-dos, and record audio. All data is synchronised with the Evernote web service and made available to clients on Windows, Mac, Web, and mobile devices. Three Dead in Shooting at Swiss Factory
GENEVA — At least 3 people were killed in a shooting at a Swiss factory on Wednesday, the police said, adding that the gunman was among the dead. The episode was the second mass shooting in Switzerland this year.

The shooting occurred at about 9 a.m. in the canteen of a Kronospan wood processing factory in the town of Menznau, about 14 miles west of Lucerne, the police said in a statement. A spokesman for the police in Lucerne said that the gunman was a 42-year-old employee of the factory, but he gave no further details. The police said that the gunman was among those dead but that he was not shot by the police. The police were still at the factory investigating.
Seven people were injured in the shooting, the police said. The helicopter rescue service RGA said it evacuated four seriously injured people to hospital, the Swiss news agency SDA reported.
Mass shootings are uncommon in Switzerland, but the shooting in Menznau was the second such episode in two months, and it could revive debate on gun control in Switzerland, where it is estimated that there are between two and three million guns in circulation among the country’s population of eight million people.

Luxor balloon disaster 'blow' for Egyptian tourism
(CNN) -- The tragic hot air balloon crash in Luxor on Tuesday comes at a time when Egypt's tourism industry has been struggling to prove that the country is still safe to visit in the wake of the 2011 revolution.
Nineteen people died when canisters aboard the balloon exploded over Luxor, a popular destination for tourists visiting its ancient temples and tombs.

International tourism has long been a mainstay of the Egyptian economy, with United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) figures showing it generated $10.1B in 2012.
"To give you an idea, international tourism generates more income to Egypt that the Suez Canal ($5.1B in 2011 as compared to $8.7B from tourism that same year)," UNWTO chief of communications Sandra Carvao said. "In terms of the impact on jobs, tourism employs directly nearly 18 million people."

In January -- two years after the start of the 2011 uprising that overthrew long-time Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak-- protests again took place in Egyptian cities. Official media reported that at least seven people were killed during clashes between anti-government protesters and those loyal to new President Mohamed Morsi.

Nadejda Popova, senior travel and tourism analyst at market research company Euromonitor International, acknowledged that the ongoing political unrest -- as well as Europe's economic downturn -- had affected Egyptian tourism.
But she said Egypt remained a key Middle Eastern tourism destination and that there were indications that there had been a slight recovery in 2012. Euromonitor's preliminary figures suggested that there had been a 4% rise on 2011 to 9.4 million tourism arrivals -- as well as signs investors had not given up on Egypt's tourism market, she said.
The UNWTO's 2012 data also pointed to what Carvao described as "a clear recovery in demand", with a 17% increase in tourism arrivals, to 11.2 million.
How safe is hot air ballooning?
However, Popova said numbers were still down, with the political transition "heavily impacting" Egyptian tourism.
"It is far away from the pre-crisis levels when we had 12 million, for example, in 2010 tourist arrivals in the country," she said. "The political instability and the continuous uprising have been probably among the biggest threats to this recovery." Popova said she expected numbers to return to their pre-crisis levels by 2017.
Earlier this month Egypt's tourism minister, Hisham Zazou, told CNN that live webcams were being installed in holiday hotspots to prove that the country's tourism industry was healthy. Footage of holidaymakers "basking in the sun" would give Egypt's tourism industry more credibility, he said. "When [tourists] see it, they will come."

Popova said the Egyptian authorities were developing strategies to strengthen tourism with a focus on diversifying the market. In 2012, Russia remained one of the leading countries in terms of arrivals, alongside travelers from the UK, Germany and Italy, but the tourism ministry was trying to lure in more travelers from other markets such as Asia and Latin America, she said.

Morsi's decision to host Mahmoud Ahmadinejad-- the first Iranian president to visit Egypt in more than 30 years -- was potentially another way of diversifying the consumer segment, she said.

Travel journalist and senior travel editor at Britain's The Independent newspaper Simon Calder said an increase in interest from Asia was unfortunately reflected in the list of the dead from the Luxor disaster. Officials said those on board included nine tourists from Hong Kong, four from Japan, three from Britain, two from France and one from Hungary.
The last thing post-revolutionary Egypt needed was "a tragedy of this magnitude," Calder said.
"Even though -- during the entire two years to my knowledge -- not a single tourist has been harmed, it gives the impression of a state unraveling where security cannot be guaranteed," he said. It's a tremendous thing and great tribute to the people in the country that they've managed to protect their guests, however this is possibly going to create a different image."
Popova said while she did not expect the crash to have "major repercussions" for Egypt's tourism industry as a whole, it had tarnished its image.
Egypt's temporary ban on balloon flights -- introduced after the crash -- was "an indication the authorities are concerned not only about the safety of the people but also about their image and how people perceive them," she said. The disaster was a blow for an industry "trying everything in their effort to bring people back to the country," she said.

Varun Gandhi acquitted in a hate speech case
Bareilly (UP), Feb 27 (PTI) BJP MP Varun Gandhi was today acquitted by a local court in neighbouring Pilibhit district in connection with a hate speech case lodged against him during Lok Sabha elections in 2009.
Varun has been aqcuitted by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Abdul Qayyum in a case of an alleged hate speech during an election rally at Dalchandra locality lodged against him at Kotwali police station in March 2009, prosecution sources said.

In terms of appearance, it looks quite similar to Apple iPhone 5 from the side and HTC One, what with its rounded edges and thin profile. We tried the elegant-looking black coloured model (the device is also available in white).
Z10 has a 4.2-inch touchscreen that has the requisite sensors and the 2MP secondary camera on top and the BlackBerry logo at the bottom. The front has a big bezel on top as well as bottom of the touchscreen, which adds to its height a bit. Hardware keys in the phone include Power/Lock on top and volume rocker and the voice control on the right side and are extremely easy to access while holding the phone which fits the palm easily.
The back cover has matte finish and feels good to the touch. The back is bare, except for the 8MP primary camera with LED flash and the company's logo, while the speaker grille is located at the bottom. The earphone jack is placed on top and microUSB and miniHDMI ports are on the left side.
Under the hood
BlackBerry Z10 packs a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, coupled with 2GB RAM, while the graphics are handled by the Adreno 225 GPU. Its screen has 1280x768p resolution and 356ppi pixel density, which is disappointing and way behind Android-powered competitors like Sony Xperia Z, HTC Butterfly and the number of phablets about to hit the market.
Connectivity options in BlackBerry Z10 are Wi-Fi, 2G, 3G, 4G, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB 2.0. Powered by a 1,800mAh battery, the phone comes with 16GB onboard storage and supports microSD cards up to 64GB.
Software
We were truly excited about the software running on BlackBerry Z10 - and it did not disappoint us. The new OS brings a new twist to a tried-and-tested interface of BlackBerry phones and does a good job as there is only a small learning curve to acclimatise the user. So, instead of pressing the back button, like you would do on an Android or Windows Phone device, you put your finger on the glass below the screen and swipe upwards to do various tasks, such as turning on the screen, or going to the home screen.
In BlackBerry 10, you get a home screen that doubles up as the app menu, task switcher and the all-new Hub. The OS is very responsive and has a few preloaded apps that are commonly used everyday such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, BBM, Camera, Maps, Box and Adobe Reader. Other apps bundled in Z10 are Compass, Calculator, Voice Control, NewsStand, Story Maker, Doc To Go and Remember, among others.
We were a bit surprised that even though there is no native YouTube app for the platform, it was shown in the menu. When we tried it out, it just opened the mobile version of the website in the browser, which worked well but was still not quite like having the app there. The tight integration of the hardware and software ensured that the smartphone worked well and there was no lag at all in our day-to-day usage.
BlackBerry Z10 is more than a piece of hardware - it has an operating system that offers various services that add value to the overall user experience. Some of the cool Z10 features by BlackBerry are Story Maker, Remember, Balance, Hub and voice control and we would like to take a moment to discuss them as they add to the overall experience tremendously.
The Hub acts as the single point for you to check all your updates, like new Facebook notifications, tweets, emails, LinkedIn messages, SMSs etc. If you want to open it, you just have to keep swiping towards the left of the screen till you cross the first menu page and task switcher. It is very easy to navigate and gives you options like posting new messages, emails and social network updates, depending on the service you are working on in the Hub.
BlackBerry Balance is a feature aimed at corporate users who want to keep their work and personal lives separate - on their phone. It allows users to store apps and data on two distinct profiles - Work and Personal. Users can easily switch between the two profiles and users who bring their device to office can easily format the Work profile when they switch jobs without having to change any setting in the personal one.
Remember is a content aggregation app that can come in handy if you want to keep photos, videos and audio recording of any event sorted. For example, all the images and videos clicked at any particular concert can be put in a single folder. The folder can be tagged as well, so all the folders with a tag like 'Birthday' or 'Party' will come up when you search for it.
Story Maker can be a fun app for users who take a lot of photos and want to make them special by converting them into a single video. You just select the photos you want to include and pick the audio clip you want to go with it and the app will automatically create a video with effects like cascading images etc.
Voice control in BlackBerry Z10 is quite refined and performs quite well, though it cannot match the intuitiveness that Google Now or Apple Siri bring to the table. We didn't get to play much with it, but going by what we experienced, it should stand its ground well against others. It is quite adept at recognising the Indian accent and finding the requisite app or data over a reliable network. However, like its rivals, its performance also suffers when used in places with ambient noise.
The browser in BlackBerry Z10 is quite fast and responsive and supports Abode Flash natively, so the whole world wide web in its true form is at your fingertips. The Maps app in BB Z10 needs to be improved, since we could not get the lock on specific places like monuments or generic sites like New Delhi or India.
BlackBerry has spoken quite a bit about the innovations it has added in its keyboard, and it shows. The on-screen Qwerty keyboard is well laid out, with sufficient spaces between letters and has all the all functionalities of the native keyboard of Android, iOS and Windows Phone platforms.
The best part about the keyboard is its word suggestion capability, which is very useful while sending text messages and emails. However, it was oddly absent while searching for Maps and sending Facebook messages. Nevertheless, we liked what we saw, especially the part when you just flick at a letter to select it.
Multimedia
The 8MP camera of BlackBerry Z10 was a big letdown for us and did worse than that of even mid-range smartphones available nowadays, and we are not even taking Nokia's Lumia series, iPhone 5 or Sony Xperia Z into consideration. The images in lowlight conditions were grainy and even in daylight, its photo quality could not measure up to that of rivals. The camera app in itself is quite basic and does not offer much to the user and video quality is also below par for a device priced as high as Rs 43,490.
The video and music player apps of Z10 are also free of any bells and whistles and do the job, but just so. So you do not have too many functionalities like pulling lyrics for songs off the internet or changing the aspect ratio of the video. We were, however, quite happy with the audio output of the smartphone and were happy to listen to some peppy music on it, though songs with heavy bass did not play so well.
Overall performance
The all-new BlackBerry Z10 did quite well in our review, barring a few glitches like camera and Maps (which are actually quite important in today's smartphone race). The device performed without any lag and using the keyboard was a treat. The learning curve for the new operating system was very small and even new users are likely to become adept at it within a short period. The new interface is refreshing and brings subtle changes to the table, something that pleased us quite a lot, instead of posing a problem. Call quality was decent and transferring data was smooth and fast.
Now the big question! Does it measure up to the rivals?
Yes, in its own way, BlackBerry Z10 does give competition to rivals but in doing so, it caters to only a small category of buyers. The lack of apps on BB10 platform is an obvious gaping hole for the OS and even with 75,000 native apps (and over 9,000 made especially for India), it is likely to lose out to the large scale consumer market due to absence of popular apps like Instagram or the entire suite of Google services.
BBM which had been losing its charm to cross-platform apps like WhatsApp and Viber has got bolstered with new features like BBM-to-BBM video calling which do bring something extra to the table. WhatsApp and Viber will be launched on the platform within the next few months, so buyers will not have the luxury of choice on the platform immediately.
With Z10, the manufacturer will continue to win hearts in the corporate sector with its strong security suite as well as BlackBerry Balance. The Contacts app is also something for users to look forward to as it merges various profiles of your Facebook, LinkedIn, email and phonebook contacts intuitively. Moreover, it does not have the boring UI of Android and iOS or the much-too-flashy interface of WP8 platform, which may please many a buyers.
Despite the advancements on the software front, Z10 does fall short of rivals when it comes to hardware. Its display quality is nowhere near the standards set by Apple's Retina or the full HD-capable Android devices. It has a strong connectivity suite, but shortage of apps will certainly irk buyers, something that the manufacturer knows very well too, and we hope is working on it.
However, the OS does give provision for developers to port their Android apps to BB10 with ease. This creates the opportunity for the platform to get the requisite number of apps to get off the ground in the consumer market, though we can never be sure of how the user experience will be for such ported apps. The company has already said that 40% of the apps available on BB10 platform are Android ports, such as Skype, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter and Angry Birds, among others.
Other popular apps available on the platform are Jetpack Joyride, LinkedIn, Gaana, AccuWeather, Paper Camera, Zomato etc. However, some users may be discouraged from buying the phone rightaway due to the absence of the popular apps like WhatsApp, Instagram and Viber from the platform, at least for now.
Is the sky-high price tag justified?
Well, BlackBerry Z10 is likely to gain ground in the enterprise sector and may go on to become the favourite of BlackBerry fans and corporate users. However, for a regular consumer in a budget conscious market like India, Z10 is unlikely to hold much charm. While the men may buy it, the BlackBerry boys are likely to stay away given the hole it will burn in their pockets.
Even with the revamped UI and tight integration of software and hardware, we find that the device is just too pricey. It could have been a better buy at a price band of Rs 35,000 to Rs 38,000, but does not seem to be the best device to go for at a price of Rs 43,490, especially when the poor camera quality is taken into account.
We would certainly wait for a mid-range BB10-powered smartphone to hit the markets because the beauty truly lies in the software in this case, rather than the hardware.

MUMBAI: The power sector growth has slowed in the nine-month period ending December 2012 with several projects getting delayed, the annual economic survey has noted.
Central-sector projects status report revealed that implementation of 45 out of 98 ongoing power projects and 21 coal projects out of 51 are behind schedule due to delays in land acquisition, municipal permission, supply of materials, award of work, operational issues, etc. Investment in the sector dried as environment continued to be challenging, according to the Economic Survey 2013.
On the capacity addition front, India added 9,854 mw of new capacity in nine-month ended December, which amounts to around 55% of the annual capacity addition target of 17,956 mw. The capacity addition during the 12th Plan period is estimated at 88,537 mw.
During the 11th Five Year Plan, nearly 55,000 MW of new generation capacity was created, yet there continued to be an overall energy deficit of 8.7% and peak shortage of 9%.
The government feels energy availability does not match the need and the gap may widen
as the economy moves to a higher growth trajectory and India's success in resolving energy bottlenecks remains one of the key challenges in achieving the projected growth outcomes.
Import dependence in case of coal is projected to be about 22.4% by 2016-17 because resources currently allocated to energy supply are not sufficient for narrowing the gap between energy needs and energy availability. Coal and lignite will continue to dominate the energy scenario and by 2021-2 the share of these two fuel products will be about 66.8 % in total commercial energy produced and about 56.9% in total commercial energy supply by 2021-2.
In terms of energy equivalent of all the primary energy sources in 2010-11, the share of coal and lignite, electricity (hydro and nuclear), and natural gas was 52%, 28%, and 11 % respectively.
The Survey revealed that power generation growth slowed to 4.6% in April-December 2012 as against 9.3% reported in the same nine months a year ago, while production in almost all other core sector segments rose in the period.
Electricity generation by power utilities during 2012-13 was targeted to go up by 6.05% to 930 billion units. In the nine-month period, the plant load factor of state-sector utilities remained lower than that of private- and central-sector utilities.
Nevertheless it expected that four ultra mega power projects of 4,000 mw, except Tilaiya UMPP, will be commissioned during the 12th Plan.
On the finance front, power accounts for 50% share in total credit flow to infrastructure sector. The rate of growth of this sector, after moderating to 13.94% in Q1FY13 improved to 21.58% in Q3.
Nevertheless, foreign direct investment in the power sector slowed to $ 456 million in nin-months ended December from $1,436.75 million reported in the same period a year ago due to continued global risks and moderated business sentiment.
As on 30 November 2012, electrification works in 1,06,116 un-electrified villages and intensive electrification in 2,73,328 partially electrified villages were completed and free electricity connections to 202.60 lakh BPL households have been released.
Elasticity of energy use ( Kwh per rupee), defined as the amount of energy consumed for generating one unit of gross domestic production ( GDP), has remained less than one.
In the thermal category, growth in generation from coal, lignite, and gas-based stations was 13.90% , 19.81%, and (-) 25.49 % respectively. The overall plant load factor (PLF), a measure of efficiency of thermal power stations, during April to December 2012 declined to 69.63 % against PLF of 71.94 % achieved during April to December2011.
20 killed at Sealdah market fire in Kolkata
At least 20 people were killed and 50 others sustained injury after a fire swept through a six-storey "illegal" godown-cum-office complex at Surya Sen market in Kolkata's Sealdah area in the wee hours on Wednesday.
According to Kolkata police, the inferno was reported at around 3.50 am, following which 26 fire tenders rushed to the spot to fight the blaze for several hours. Although many people trapped in the building were rescued, the fire killed 20 lives, including a woman.
About 50 injured people, many of them being critical, were taken to neighbouring NRS and Calcutta Medical College hospitals. The cause of the fire, however, was under investigation, Kolkata Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Javed Shamim said.
West Bengal Fire Services minister Javed Khan visited the spot, starting the usual political blame-game. "This is an illegal building, which came up during the Left rule. They should explain and be held responsible."
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, later, floated a conspiracy theory. "Who knows that some people deliberately set the place on fire with an ulterior motive. We have ordered an inquiry. KMC, the fire department and the police will jointly conduct the inquiry and submit its report in three days. The probe will study all aspects," she said.
Banerjee announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Governor M K Narayanan, too, visited the spot.
This is the third major incident of fire in city in recent years. The fire at AMRI Hospital in the city on December 9, 2011, which killed 93 patients. Earlier in 2010 Stephen Court fire in Kolkata killed 43 people.
Chopper deal: Rajya Sabha passes motion for a JPC probe amidst Opposition walkout
New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed a motion for the formation of Joint Parliamentary Committee on chopper deal even as the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Trinamool Congress and the Janata Dal (United) walked out of the House opposing the motion. The Opposition punched holes into the government's arguments that it was serious about the truth and nailing the culprits by pointing out that till now only a preliminary enquiry has been ordered and no FIR has been filed. The motion was supported in the Rajya Sabha by the Congress and its allies including the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party.
AK Antony said he was ashamed of the "scam" as a Defence Minister and assured that the government would investigate the matter and punish the culprits. "Anybody involved (in the scam) will have to face serious consequences...the government is determined to find out the truth," said the Union Minister in Parliament.
Antony said scams taking place in the country were a matter of shame and would be dealt with seriousness. "Culprits must be punished. Tax payers' money cannot be wasted," he said. The Defence Minister also told the House that the government had ordered an inquiry into the matter as soon as it came to light and that every complaint received in connection with the issue was being taken seriously.

Opposing the motion, Arun Jaitley said a JPC would be an exercise in futility and called it is a diversionary tactic.
"Six powerful foreign companies have been blacklisted by my ministry," Antony said in the Rajya House. He further added that a CBI inquiry was also ordered in the case. "Names of 11 individuals and four companies have come up in the investigation," he said.
Antony said the government followed all procedures in the case and tried hard to procure documents from the Italian authorities but they "officially refused to share any information regarding the case as per their law".
The Defence Minister said "strongest possible action" would be taken against the culprits once the CBI completes its investigation and files a report in the case. "Whoever is found guilty will get maximum punishment," he said. Antony also said the government was willing to conduct a JPC probe into the "scam".
The Bharatiya Janata Party, however, wasn't convinced by the Defence Minister's explanation as Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha that "there was a sense of helplessness in the Defence Minister's speech". He also called the move to have a JPC "an exercise in futility".
"We suspect the government does not want to know the name of the bribe taker," he added. Jaitley accused the government of not being serious about finding the truth in the case. "The government has given culprits enough time to destroy all evidence," he alleged.
Jaitley asked the government to explain why it had not registered an FIR in the case. "Is the government willing to have a JPC headed by an Opposition MP," he challenged.
Earlier, another BJP leader slammed the government on the issue saying if leads were available in the case, why did the government not initiate a probe into the matter. "The issue is not about the quality of helicopters but about kickbacks, the middlemen are known. The government needs to find out about the receivers," BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said in the Rajya Sabha. He also demanded that a "time-bound" investigation should be conducted in the matter.
The JPC will have 30 members - 10 from the Rajya Sabha and 20 from the Lok Sabha. It will monitor the speed of the investigation in the case and will file its report within three months of its constitution.
